Final Blog Reflection Unit 1: Slab Construction (Box) Photo: Never having a ceramics class before, what were your first impressions of the class through this project? Starting off in this class, I was really amazed. I found that everything moved at a really nice pace that I was able to keep up with. It instantly became my favorite class, one that I could look forward to coming to every other day. When I first came in, I was taken aback at how many different techniques there were. Then use more clay and form it into the shape of an ice cream scoop, and hollow out the inside of both. Glaze: - stone matte, straw for the cone, and then cotton for the ice cream and teacher palette for the sprinkles. Method: Same as the first one, just make another ice cream scoop and stack it on top. Glaze: - stone matte, straw for the cone, and then any pig pink for the top scoop and metallic brown for the bottom scoop. Method: Take a slab of clay, cut it to size. Then use a popsicle stick to make lines on it, and then finish with a popsicle stick at the bottom. Tripod mug Pre Fired Photo: Construction What skills, techniques, or process did you employ to create your mug? I used the technique of undulating a slab. I started off with a slab, and then made it into a cylinder. I pinched feet and then undulated the slab. Then I had to pull a handle. I used little balls of clay to fill in the holes at the bottom of the mug (the feet). After that, I used the texture tool to make texture on the lower half of my piece. Finally, I used the lip finishing tool to finish the piece. How does your final construction look? Also describe the difficulties in construction. I'm really happy with my final construction. I feel like it turned out pretty even, and the texture looked really good. My handle also curved really well and added an element of more undulation to my piece. I think that the shape is really unique and it's very different from other culture's vessels. It also is very subtle, and I think that it makes it look very sophisticated. I really understand how to use coils to make a vessel, and I think I can apply these techniques to other pieces I do.
