Semester 1 SS Reflection

1. What are the most interesting aspects of history that you have learned this year? Include an answer for unit 1 and unit 2. I really liked the whole Multicultural America unit, especially the immigration to Ellis Island. I never knew anything about it, and I thought that everyone just got to be an American Citizen, but during the first unit I found out that some get deported and some get put in quarantine. In the Unit 2, I never knew ANYTHING about amendments and the bill of rights, or how the american government works. I enjoyed learning about how the government works, and I finally understood what the Constitution is. I now know how a bill becomes a law, and I know a few of the amendments! 2. What surprised you this year? (This could be about history, our class, 8th grade, the world). This year, I was really surprised about the world, especially the election. It surprised me because I learned about the way the election works. I thought that Hilary Clinton would win because sh...

Science Semester Reflection

Image
During this semester, we learned about a variety of things. We learned about genes, DNA, microscopes, heredity, natural selection, cow eyes, and more. Science is something that I enjoy, and I find it very fascinating to discover things, as I am a curious person. This first semester also addressed different DSLO's, but I'm going to be focusing on character, collaboration, critical thinking, and content knowledge. Character       First, we have character. I chose character as one of my DSLO's to write about because I feel like this is something that matters to me. I really like science because I am really curious. In this first semester of science, we learned about stuff that made my curiosity spark, and I was really interested. It made my character different, and I learned about things that I had never even though about before (genes, heredity, natural selection, cow eyes). I found it really amazing to learn about how things work, and they actuall...

Documentary Analysis

BLACKFISH: 1. What kind of shots do you notice are used most often in the documentary? What is their impact on the film? Mainly long shots to get the shots of the whales and the trainer. There were also some mid and close shots for the interviews. There were impactful because if they were different, the audience's perspective would be really different. They also helped the audience understand what was happening, and so they could get a better look on things. The shots were also moving a lot, following the whales around, making the audience feel like they are there. 2. What interview and narration style does the film tend to use? How does it work in telling the subject’s story in the documentary? There was mainly voiceover narrations and indirect interview. It makes you feel like the interviewee is talking to you, and you feel really connected to them. The voiceover narration helped bring everything together because it helped make everything flow nicely. The indirect intervi...

What is the optimal amount of homework for SAS middle school students?

Math Reflection: Investigation 1

1) Describe and exponential growth factor. Include key properties such as growth factors. An exponential growth pattern is something that grows at a constant amount. The previous amount is multiplied by a growth factor. Example: Growth factor of 2, or doubling. 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 62, 128, 512, 1024, 2048, 4096... 2) How are exponential functions similar to and different from the linear functions you worked with in earlier units? Exponential functions are similar to linear functions because both have y-intercepts. They can both be graphed, have and equation, and table. Exponential functions are different than linear functions because exponential functions have growth factors, but linear functions have slopes. Linear functions go up by a constant rate of change, but exponential functions don't. The graph for linear functions include straight lines whereas the ones for exponential functions are curved. Linear equations take the form of y=mx+b, but exponential functions take ...

My Favorite Music Videos

https://youtu.be/GKSRyLdjsPA  - Narrative. I really like this video because it tells a story in a really interesting manner, one that you wouldn't see in many other music videos, and the story is very original and compelling. https://youtu.be/GTyN-DB_v5M  - Performance and Narrative. I liked this video a lot because it tells a story about a girl, but it also shows the artist singing, because the song is about her.

SMART SLEEP GOAL

EXAMPLE: My SLEEP Goal Typically you try to answer the 6-W questions EXAMPLE Who: Who is involved? That’s easy! “I …” What: What do I want to accomplish? Again, be specific here: “… want to improve my max push ups in 60 seconds by 7 … ” When: Establish a time frame. “… in two months …” Which: Identify requirements and constraints. Which way are you going to do this? “… by eating right and exercising …” Where: Identify a location. The more details you fill in to form a complete picture, the more likely you will be to execute the plan. “… in the gym …” Why: Give specific reasons, purposes or benefits of accomplishing the goal. “… so I can be healthy, fit and energetic.” “I … want to improve my max push ups in 60 seconds by 7 … in two months … by eating right and exercising … in the gym … so I can be healthy, fit and energetic.” “My REWARD for achieving this goal will be.............” My SLEEP Goal Who: I... People Reclining on Planes

Imagine you are on a really small plane, with really limited leg room, and almost no space to move. Now imagine if some amazing person in front of you decides that they are going to use your limited space, and use it as theirs. Their chair, along with them, slowly moves back, coming at you like some sort of predatory animal.        Reclined.        There goes your minuscule amount of space, the one you cherished like no other. Wow!  you think. What kind of great person would recline their chair INTO my PERSONAL SPACE BUBBLE?        You silently cry.        Now do you see what I'm talking about? Greedy people who decide to be inconsiderate and recline their chair, just to get more space for themselves, without realizing that THEY are taking space away from YOU. That too, imagine it for a 13 hour flight! Ugh.        And if you are the type that does recl...

My Second Home

Note to the Reader Dear Reader, While you are reading my essay, I would like you to know a few things. I want you to know the kind of person I am, and how I became the person I am today. Gymnastics has taught me about what comes in life, and how you just have to deal with things sometimes. It has taught me about myself, and what type of person I am. I want you think about what type of person I am, and how you think gymnastics has shaped me. I would also like you to know that this essay was one interesting journey for me. I started off with an idea that I thought would make it to the delete button, but I carried it through. After revising for a while, I would read it and think about other ideas for my essay. But I kept going through with it, editing small things, and making it better and better. Today, what you will be reading is not the end or final product of this journey. It is somewhere in the middle, because there is no end to it. It goes on and on and on, and i...

Ellis Island Reflection

1. How do you think people felt upon their arrival to Ellis Island? They probably felt excited that they had reached the "new world" after 3 long and hard weeks of travel, but some were probably nervous because they didn't know what lay ahead. 2. What do you think the immigration hall screening was like? I think it was really chaotic because they were probably A TON of people, and it would've smelt really bad after being on a  boat for 3 weeks, it would've been really loud, people screaming and crying after leaning about their fates, and there would've been no space to move around because it would've been so crowded. 3. How did you feel when you arrived at the classroom and learned about your fate? I felt really sad because everyone else was sad there. After I found out that I was going back "home" I was super mad because I had to take another 3 week journey to get to a place that I was trying to escape. I was wishing that they could've c...

Letter to Bartolemé De Las Casas

Hi Bartolemé,                                                            1501         How are things going for you? Okay, so anyways, I needed to talk to you about something. You know how at school, we were always taught how everyone is equal, and how everyone is made by God? The thing is, the encomienda's that all these Spaniards have been doing, they go directly against this rule. We, the Tainos, are all humans too. But somehow were not treated like that. We're being take n away, forced to work, and having our families killed by nasty diseases that dirty Spaniards have brought. Please, please, please try your best to make them stop the encomiendas. Take this as a request from me. Imagine it from my perspective; random people come into your land, and they force you to work. How does that even make sense? Anyways, do ...

Feature Article Reflection

Image
This will affect my personal health practice because I now know ways to help my sleep. My sleep will finally be sound, and I know that I'm not the only one who "suffers" from this "epidemic". I'm always tired in the morning because of time management. That sounds pretty vague, but what I really mean is that I finally know that I feel tired in the morning because of how I don't have a lot of time on my hands.      Some ways I could advocate this are by posting things on social media. This would probably be the most effective way because this is something that 7th graders are on EVERYDAY. Some other ways are in casual conversations, I can bring this topic up, and that person can do the same (the chain keeps going). The last way I could do this is by something I have already done, and that is by conducting a survey. I conducted the survey that is featured in my article, and this got people wanting to fix the fact that they think they don't ...

Globalization Unit Reflection

Image
Political Cartoon: The Unit We used captioning and labelling in our cartoon because it really helps our message get across, so that people can understand what we are trying to say. We also used symbolism in our cartoon because people are able to understand pictures and words together really well, and symbolism was an easy way for us to get a message across using something small and easy to draw. The message of our political cartoon is that we take things for granted without know where they come from and what it’s doing to our environment. This connects to globalization because in our political cartoon it shows a line of children with no access to their own basic needs going into a factory that says "Globalization". Globalization represents all the major companies in our world. On the other side of the factory shows deforestation and pollution. This connects to globalization because it shows how from one place, the child labourers and other workers work hard and in a more...

Tallest Tower: P.E. Activity

During P.E., we had a task to build the tallest tower. We were separated into teams, and I had a really good one, as we had built the tallest tower with the Toobeez plastic tubes and connectors. I think that during this process I was the brainstormer and a little bit of the leader because I was the one who came up with how we should build the tower (I thought about the Burj Khalifa's structure as it is the tallest building in the world). I was a little bit of the leader because I kept everyone on track, and I also directed people on what to do next. We were a very cooperative team as we worked together by using each other's back as  support to reach the higher and taller parts of the building. My teammates thought I was the brainstormer, a little bit of the leader, and the peacemaker. I do agree with this, but I don't think this was my dominant trait. They said that I was the peacekeeper because when everyone was fighting about what to do, I told everyone to calm down and t...

Drawing Objects Found In A Locker

Image
Reverse value is when you have an object on a white or black background and the object is the opposite color of the background. The details on the object are the same color as the background. It's REALLY confusing! The tools I used were ink, fountain pens, pencil, eraser, light table, paint, paintbrushes, and Copic Multiliner Pens. I drew a gymnastics trophy, a donut, a water bottle, my SAS card and a drivers license from a Disneyland ride (Autopia), my wallet, money, scissors, my phone, my headphones, my hand, and a softball. The most challenging part of this assignment was figuring out what to make black and what to make white. Once you figured that out, for white, you had to re-outline things and you had to do a lot of small, fine, details. https://lmpta.wordpress.com/art-docent-program/5th-grade-projects/lines-create-illusions-op-art/ I like this optical illusion art because this person also used a bit of reversed value to make this look like a room. This helped...

Poverty Unit Reflection

Image
During this unit, I learned about poverty in my family. I also learned about poverty cycles (focusing on Papua New Guinea) and how micro-financing works. This makes me think that there is so much left to do to make the world a developed place. I am so used to developed places that sometimes I forget how big the world is. I forget that there are places who aren't even close to being as fortunate as me. We learned about social entrepreneurs, KIVA loans, and NGO's. One of the activities I found interesting was interviewing my family . I learned that my family has connections with poverty, and that my family escaped the poverty cycle by getting a good education . This is important because I didn’t think that my family would have any connections with poverty, and it is relevant because I learned new things about poverty, and I know how my grandpa escaped poverty. I’m now inspired to learn more about him because then I will understand so much more and this wil...

Healthy Snack Reflection - Parfait

Image
1. My snack was very healthy because there was protein, and it was high in vitamin c. It was made of greek yogurt, granola, strawberries, blueberries, and bananas. There were many more good things on the calorie counter than there were bad things. The only bad thing there was, was that there was too much sugar. This isn't added sugar, but it is sugar from the fruits, so the sugar is healthy. 2. I don't think that much about if my snack is health because when I do gymnastics, I burn a lot of that fat off. I now realize that burning it off doesn't mean I got rid of it. My goal is to start eating healthier. 3. I think food is meant to be eaten with other people because then you can share how much like or dislike the food. Some effects of eating and socializing is that sometimes you forget about you manners. You may talk with your mouth full or just be rude. 4. I enjoyed preparing my food because I did some of it with my friends and some of it with my mom. I think if you put...

Linear Relationships - Comparing Costs

Image
a) Determine the cost of each plan if you send 500 text messages in one month. Show your working out. Plan A: $79.95 Plan B: $90.2 Plan C: $74.95 I worked this out by looking at the graph where the x  axis was 500 (the x axis was amount of texts sent), and then I saw where each line landed on the y axis. b) Your boss asks you to visually display three plans and compare them so you can point out the advantages of each plan to your customer. c) A customer wants to know how to decide which plan will save her the most money. Determine which plan has the lowest cost given the number of text messages a customer is likely to send. For anything less than 400 texts, Plan A is the best (cheapest). For anything more than 400 and less than 800 texts, Plan C is the best (cheapest). For anything more than 800 texts, Plan B is the best (cheapest).
