Science Semester Reflection

       During this semester, we learned about a variety of things. We learned about forces, chemical equations, energy, and more. I really enjoy science as a subject, and I think it's very interesting to explore new things, as I am a very curious person. This first semester also addressed different DSLO's, but I'm going to be focusing on creativity, character, collaboration, and critical thinking. Creativity        First, we have creativity. I chose creativity as one of my DSLO's to write about because I feel like this is something that matters to me. This semester, we learned about many things that sparked my creativity. It made me use my creativity a lot more in many activities, for example the egg drop base. I learned about many things that I had never knew about and I realized how important they are.       During this semester, we learned about a variety of things. We learned about genes, DNA, microscopes, heredity, natural selection, cow eyes, and more. Science is something that I enjoy, and I find it very fascinating to discover things, as I am a curious person. This first semester also addressed different DSLO's, but I'm going to be focusing on character, collaboration, critical thinking, and content knowledge. Character       First, we have character. How Old is the Ocean-Floor?

1. Where are the oldest parts of the oceans? The oldest parts of the ocean are near the coast of each continent, or away from the Mid-Ocean Ridge. This is because the Mid-Ocean Ridge is actually an underwater mountain range of volcanos, so when the volcano erupts, the magma hardens because of the water, creating new rocks. Once the new rocks have formed, they need a place to be, so they push the other (older) rocks outwards, so that the older rocks are on the edges because they have been pushed there by the new rocks. This is also why there are so many earthquakes (the dots on the first map) happening in the Mid-Ocean Ridges (the earthquakes are caused by the volcanos erupting). 2. Do the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, and Arctic ocean basins have the same age and patterns? They have different ages, but they have the same patterns because they all increase in age as the reach landmasses. I am making an educated guess for all of these answers! 1. Where are the oldest parts of the oceans? The oldest parts of the oceans are the ones in the middle, or the bottom of the ocean. This makes sense because the bottom layer always comes first, and the middle of each ocean has been untouched, so maybe it's the oldest part because thing usually grow around a center base, and the middle would act as a center base because it has been untouched. The deeper parts of the ocean may be older too because they would have more water over them, going back to the theory of the bottom layers coming first. 2. Do the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, and Arctic ocean basins have the same age and patters? I think they have the same age and patterns, because if there was one big landmass (Pangea) all of the oceans had to be joined to form a mega-ocean, meaning that they all would have the same age and patterns. Stratigraphic Columns

Analyze the data and explain how these two stratigraphic columns are further evidence of continental drift. This shows that these two continents were once together because everything except for the first layer of items are the same. This is the latest layer of land, the layer that you would stand on if you went there. MYA (the numbers next to the specimens) stands for MILLIONS OF YEARS AGO. The date for everything before the first layer of land is the same, showing that these continents were once together (Pangea). For example, the Volcanics are both in the 100 - 150 MYA range. The first layer is probably different because Pangea has been split apart for millions of years, so it makes sense that there might have been a new layer of land created after Pangea split apart. When Pangea split a part, the took all of the same bottom layers with them and became individual landmasses.

Google Science Fair

Name: Calvin Rieder Name of the Invention:  Passive Dual Purpose Condensers to Provide Potable Water I think that Calvin deserves to win because his invention is very practical for people in need, whereas some of the other kids designs (I'm not saying they're bad!) are meant fore people who aren't in need. His design shows that people can have access to clean drinking water without running costs, so everybody in the world can save money! This invention can work every night without any electricity running, so in the morning there would be enough water for the whole day because the invention would have been working during the night, producing water. This invention also doesn't need a person to monitor it, or turn on a switch. This can save people's live.

CSI Science

1) Who do you think is responsible for the crime? I think that Mr. and Mrs. K are responsible for the crime. 2) Why (Evidence)? the crime had to be committed by multiple people  because the messages say CATCH  US  IF YOU CAN. This means that the culprits are two or more people. There is also paint, from the art room, and there is a picture of Egypt, and we learned about Egypt in Social Studies and Mrs. K teaches Social Studies. It also talks about hiking and biking and both teachers love to do that. It also talks about how they have kids who hate something about the gerbils, and Mr and Mrs. K have 2 kids. 3) Anything need further analysis? I think that the fingerprints need further analysis because then we can confirm who committed the crime, and I think that the riddles also need some analysis and the handwriting.

How Does An Electromagnet Work?

For this project, I was working with Hannah. The project was to make an electromagnetic fishing rod to catch fish (that were paper-clips). Out electromagnet works because we have a closed circuit. The closed circuit is made up of wire, batteries, and a switch. First, we had batteries to make electricity run through the circuit. Then we had wires coming out of the batteries so that they could make a closed circuit. Next on the wooden stick was our switch. The switch was made up of two thumbtacks pushed into the wood, side by side. On one thumbtack, both wires (the battery and the coiled wires) were wrapped around the thumbtack, touching. This made one side of the circuit closed, and one side open. For the other thumbtack, there was a paperclip to make the switch close and open. The wire from the battery was wrapped around the thumbtack, but the coiled wire wasn't. This was because we needed to have an on and off switch. Electricity and Circuits

In science, we are learning about electricity. First, we had to figure our if we were going to do it with someone, and I paired up with Hannah. We decided that we would do our quiz on inventors and inventions because it was kinda cheesy because there was a lightbulb, and there is usually a light bulb "on your head" when you get an idea, so we thought it would be cool to do that. Then, we needed to research, and find 10 questions to match the inventor and invention with. We put pictures for the invention, and names for the names. Then, we put brass fastener clips and we wired the matching questions in the back of the folder. Then, we had to make a circuit, and then all we needed to was put the wire on the matching inventor and invention! The reason the lightbulb lit up was because there was a closed circuit. I'm really happy with how this quiz turned out!

WP Blog 3 - Almost Done

Lexa, Sami, and I have decided not to do the dance competition because it was right after the bake sale, and we didn't have enough done to make everything happen. I think that it's ok that we didi that because we are going to present to the ES after spring break. We still need to do out summative presentation, but I think we have enough time to get that done, now that we aren't doing the dance competition. I hope we can finish the presentation in time, and I am a little stressed out about it because I have to present alone because I am in a different block than Sami and Lexa are in.

WP Blog 2 - Working

This week, I have been working on all aspects of my project such as what I am going to make for the bake sale, and who and when we are going to present and we are finalizing everything about our dance competition. I think that I could start to finalize what I am doing in my group soon. I can't really work on the bake sale art but we are doing it on tuesday so I can make them over the weekend. I know what I am going to make, and I am going to make smores cupcakes, with the frosting tinted blue with "WATER" written on it. The napkins might have something about water on it too. Next week is going to be fun!!

WP Blog 1 - My Idea

So today, I have decided what I am doing for the water project and who I am doing it with. I am doing this project with Lexa, and Sami, two of my friends on C side. I am really excited because we are organizing a dance competition, fundraising from a bake sale, and presenting to the Elementary School. I think that we are going to have a great service project because we have many elements, and all money that we earn is going to a charity. We have started making flyers for the dance competition. I am so excited to do this!!!

Lab E - Science

I think that the "e" under a microscope is different because of each power, and some powers are more zoomed in than others, and they can catch pieces of dust and the surrounding paper and focus on that. I think that the "e" was inverted when I looked at it under a microscope because there are concave lenses in the microscope, and other lenses that could flip the "e" around, and the lens could also flip the "e" because of it's power.

Submarine Model-Building Reflection

Question 1 Draw a colored sketch of your submarine model in the  floating ,  sinking  or  neutrally buoyant  position. Take a photo of your sketch and insert the photo below the title of your blog entry. You could also do your drawing use a digital drawing tool if you like.  Question 2 Part of the design process, is to think of design ideas to try and then test to see how those design ideas actually work.  Describe any design ideas that you had which  did not  work as expected.   I thought that putting a pack of rocks around the bottle would make it sink, but it didn't. I thought about blowing a balloon to make it float, and that didn't work.
