You should eat bugs! I mean, firstly, you already eat them. Next, there are so many more options! In the US, the food standards for canned fruit juices allow 1-2 larvas and 5 fruit-fly eggs. This is the maximum amount of insects that are allowed to be found in foods. So, if you already eat them, why don't you just know that you are eating them, because they are pretty healthy! They have a lot of protein in them. Also, there are so many bugs, humans could never run out! There are around 6 million different species of insects, and 80% of all animals walk on 6 legs (insects). This means that there are about 200 to 2,00kg of insects for each person on earth. Compared to how much protein you are getting now, the insects will provide you with much more. There are already 1,000 species that are being eaten around the world, and there are so many different ways you can prepare them. Also, we will have to. I mean, without insects we wouldn't be alive. This activity was about using proportions to find measurements. It was also using prior knowledge (such as my height), to find the height of the pole which was unknown. We took a picture, and then put it up on our laptop. Then, we measured how big we were on the screen (I was 1.5 cm, and the pole was 6.3 cm). Since we already knew that I was 57 inches, we had to find the scale factor. To find it, we divided 6.3 by 1.5, and the answer was 4.2, the scale factor. Then we multiplied my real height by the scale factor to find the height of the pillar in real life. 57 x 4.2 is 239.4. The height of the pole is 239.4 inches.

Understanding his point of view: I had an idea that I would prank my brother (17 years old) by going on his Snapchat and taking a picture of him sleeping. I wanted to see if he would notice. The outcome I expected was for him to just laugh if it off. At first, I felt really mischievous about this, but after my brother found out and got mad, I felt really bad. I felt like I had invaded his life, and I thought that he would be mad for 3 more days after that. I felt super guilty. I understood his point of view because I thought about how I would feel if I was him, and I realized that I would also be mad. Later that day I made a little "sorry" card and gave it to him. My brother forgave me and said that it was okay. He told me not to do anything like that again. The strategy was successful because by understanding how my brother felt, I managed to resolve the issue (him forgiving me).

The Mother-Daughter Book Club.  This is the book that taught me how to love reading. Before reading this book, reading was the worst piece of my homework no matter what, and I felt like I was obliged to do it. I hated it. Then, in the summer of 5th grade (going into 6th grade), a friend recommended me to read a book called The Mother-Daughter Book Club.  My friend recommended that to me because my mom wanted me to read more. I was dwelling over the fact that I had to do something I hated over the summer. I started reading, and it was then I realized something. I actually understood what people meant when they said they couldn't put the book down, because that was exactly what happened to me. I finished reading the whole series (6 big books!) in 1 month! I love this series so much, I would be fine rereading them 100 more times. I feel really bad for Ahmed because he didn't do anything wrong, and just because of assumptions people made (with no evidence/proof), he got arrested. I think that many people think that the phase of racism is over, but using this article, you can see that people may have guessed that this clock that Ahmed made was a bomb just because of his ethnicity and race. I am very shocked with the reaction of Ahmed's teacher because Ahmed is just a kid who's hobby is to build things. The lens that I reacted to was definitely shock because in this story, people just judged this high-school student by what other people who have same race. This is really unfair. The police officers said that they weren't satisfied with what Ahmed's definition of what the clock was.        9 BILLION PEOPLE . What will life be like? I think that demography will impact the world because with more people, there will be water and food shortages because there won't be enough for 9 BILLION people. On the bright side, technology and transportation will be much better, and things will be more efficient. This will be because there will be more people with great ideas to make things happen. There will be an longer life expectancy. New discoveries will be made! This has relevance to my life because I may use the new technology, and I may not have a of of water. Lots of open land that we have will be gone because the 2 billion new people will need houses to stay in, so the houses will be built on the beautiful open land we have. Many more trees will be cut down because of need for paper. Oxygen will also be consumed faster. Global warming will get worse. Demographics will help me in the future because when I am going on vacation (which will be often :) )...

I agree with most of these, but I think that my perspective, and forgiveness should be lower down on this chart, and I think that bravery and zest should be higher up. By changing some of these, I may become more successful because I can have make a better environment for others. I may want to change the place of where kindness, honesty, gratitude, and humility. These are traits that make people nicer to be around, so if I try to do these more, I think I would be more successful because people would want to hang out with me more. I am also fine with wether they are because compared to other strengths I have a lesser amount if them, but they are still strengths. I now know that I need to value what I can do best, and that I need to value what other people do best (a.k.a. their character). 1. Where are the oldest parts of the oceans? The oldest parts of the ocean are near the coast of each continent, or away from the Mid-Ocean Ridge. This is because the Mid-Ocean Ridge is actually an underwater mountain range of volcanos, so when the volcano erupts, the magma hardens because of the water, creating new rocks. Once the new rocks have formed, they need a place to be, so they push the other (older) rocks outwards, so that the older rocks are on the edges because they have been pushed there by the new rocks. This is also why there are so many earthquakes (the dots on the first map) happening in the Mid-Ocean Ridges (the earthquakes are caused by the volcanos erupting). 2. Do the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, and Arctic ocean basins have the same age and patterns? This makes sense because the bottom layer always comes first, and the middle of each ocean has been untouched, so maybe it's the oldest part because thing usually grow around a center base, and the middle would act as a center base because it has been untouched. The deeper parts of the ocean may be older too because they would have more water over them, going back to the theory of the bottom layers coming first. 2. Analyze the data and explain how these two stratigraphic columns are further evidence of continental drift. This shows that these two continents were once together because everything except for the first layer of items are the same. This is the latest layer of land, the layer that you would stand on if you went there. MYA (the numbers next to the specimens) stands for MILLIONS OF YEARS AGO. The date for everything before the first layer of land is the same, showing that these continents were once together (Pangea). For example, the Volcanics are both in the 100 - 150 MYA range. The first layer is probably different because Pangea has been split apart for millions of years, so it makes sense that there might have been a new layer of land created after Pangea split apart. When Pangea split a part, the took all of the same bottom layers with them and became individual landmasses.

I was surprised to find out that the last thing I said on Skype was talking about packing for CWW. I thought that I would be talking about something way more interesting. I don't really have a lot of social media accounts, so I do feel a bit sad about that because a lot of my friends have social media and talk about it at school, but since I don't have them, I don't really know what they're talking about, so they have to fill me in. I also think that that it's good that I don't have some social media because a lot of drama happens on social media, and a lot of people get bullied on social media, so I think this keeps me safe (also from people finding out my name, and things). The measure in degrees tells you if the angle is acute, obtuse, or a reflex because when you measure the angle, if it is in-between the 0º and 90º it is acute. Name: Calvin Rieder Name of the Invention:  Passive Dual Purpose Condensers to Provide Potable Water I think that Calvin deserves to win because his invention is very practical for people in need, whereas some of the other kids designs (I'm not saying they're bad!) are meant fore people who aren't in need. His design shows that people can have access to clean drinking water without running costs, so everybody in the world can save money! This invention can work every night without any electricity running, so in the morning there would be enough water for the whole day because the invention would have been working during the night, producing water. This invention also doesn't need a person to monitor it, or turn on a switch. This can save people's live.

1) Who do you think is responsible for the crime? I think that Mr. and Mrs. K are responsible for the crime. 2) Why (Evidence)? the crime had to be committed by multiple people  because the messages say CATCH  US  IF YOU CAN. This means that the culprits are two or more people. There is also paint, from the art room, and there is a picture of Egypt, and we learned about Egypt in Social Studies and Mrs. K teaches Social Studies. It also talks about hiking and biking and both teachers love to do that. It also talks about how they have kids who hate something about the gerbils, and Mr and Mrs. K have 2 kids. 3) Anything need further analysis? For this project, I was working with Hannah. The project was to make an electromagnetic fishing rod to catch fish (that were paper-clips). Out electromagnet works because we have a closed circuit. The closed circuit is made up of wire, batteries, and a switch. First, we had batteries to make electricity run through the circuit. Then we had wires coming out of the batteries so that they could make a closed circuit. Next on the wooden stick was our switch. The switch was made up of two thumbtacks pushed into the wood, side by side. On one thumbtack, both wires (the battery and the coiled wires) were wrapped around the thumbtack, touching. This made one side of the circuit closed, and one side open. For the other thumbtack, there was a paperclip to make the switch close and open. The wire from the battery was wrapped around the thumbtack, but the coiled wire wasn't. This was because we needed to have an on and off switch. 1) What do you know now about poetry that you didn't know before?  I know that poetry doesn't always have to make sense, and it doesn't always have to rhyme or have any technical aspects. My poems demonstrate my knowledge of poetry because it shows TIME. The data is similar because they both have an outlier of 180 minutes, and you can see that because there is one dot on each box and whisker plot that is at the 180 minutes mark. 2) What was different in the 2 sets of data? What is the height of a typical 6th grader at SAS? The height of a typical height of a sixth grader at SAS is 60.8 inches tall. I found this by finding the mean of the set of data I had. How do you compare? I am shorter that the height of a typical sixth grader because I am only 56 inches tall, where as the typical height of a 6th grader at SAS is 60.8 inches tall. Does the height of 6th grader have a lot of variability? How do you know? The height of a 6th grader at SAS has a little bit of variability because using the IQR (interquartile range), I know that if I calculated Q1, Q2, and Q3, I would find the quartile range, and it wouldn't be very big, which means that the height of a 6th grader doesn't vary (or doesn't jump from a small number to a very large number). I can also find this out by subtracting the smallest height from the largest height. Since the number is not very big in my set of data, the height of a 6th grader doesn't have a lot of variabilit...

In science, we are learning about electricity. First, we had to figure our if we were going to do it with someone, and I paired up with Hannah. We decided that we would do our quiz on inventors and inventions because it was kinda cheesy because there was a lightbulb, and there is usually a light bulb "on your head" when you get an idea, so we thought it would be cool to do that. Then, we needed to research, and find 10 questions to match the inventor and invention with. We put pictures for the invention, and names for the names. Then, we put brass fastener clips and we wired the matching questions in the back of the folder. Then, we had to make a circuit, and then all we needed to was put the wire on the matching inventor and invention! The reason the lightbulb lit up was because there was a closed circuit. I'm really happy with how this quiz turned out!

1) Are you proud of your literary essay? Why? I am very proud of my literary essay because I feel like I worked really hard on it because I spent a lot of time on it, and I tried to make every bit detailed, and to the best of it's ability. 2) What did you think of the visual process we used to generate our ideas? I thought that the visual process we went through to make our literary essay was really good because it helped me understand and think about how I needed to do things in my essay, such as make the lead strong and powerful. I'm really glad I used the outline because it helped me realize the steps I was going through to make my essay. 3) Choose your favorite sentence from your essay and copy it to your blog post. "If you are always yourself, and you have hope, you will be able to push through tough times, like Jason did. So, why wouldn’t you be yourself?"

Lexa, Sami, and I have decided not to do the dance competition because it was right after the bake sale, and we didn't have enough done to make everything happen. I think that it's ok that we didi that because we are going to present to the ES after spring break. We still need to do out summative presentation, but I think we have enough time to get that done, now that we aren't doing the dance competition. I hope we can finish the presentation in time, and I am a little stressed out about it because I have to present alone because I am in a different block than Sami and Lexa are in.

I think that making a google map helped me understand the geography more effectively than a "paper and pencil" map because it was more interactive and fun. 2. 1. What did you learn about thinking like a historian? I learned that you have to use your judgement and S.C.A.N. skills to uncover the truth about how trustworthy the source is. 2. What do you like about historical thinking? I like historical thinking because it actually makes me think about what is reliable, just in general when I am researching. I think my best response was: I think that Jason is to mournful about himself because all he does is feel sorry for himself like on page 81 it says, “ I wish I could change one letter and make everything better. But I can’t, Daddy. ” This shows that Jason keeps wanting to change things when he doesn’t look at the other side, and he is very mournful because he keeps dwelling over the fact that he can’t do things that many people can, and he should at least try to get over that fact. I think my best reflection was: I think I was good at participating in the discussion, and I shared my thoughts a lot. I was good at piggy - BACQing. I think I would have gotten a Meets-Exemplary for Verbal, and Exemplary on Non-Verbal on this discussion. This week, I have been working on all aspects of my project such as what I am going to make for the bake sale, and who and when we are going to present and we are finalizing everything about our dance competition. I think that I could start to finalize what I am doing in my group soon. I can't really work on the bake sale art but we are doing it on tuesday so I can make them over the weekend. I know what I am going to make, and I am going to make smores cupcakes, with the frosting tinted blue with "WATER" written on it. The napkins might have something about water on it too. Next week is going to be fun!!

March 11, 2015 Concert Reflection What is expected of me as a performer:   What do I need to do leading up to the performance in terms of my own practicing? I think I need to practice my stamina and using one breath for a longer amount of time. I also need to practice the parts that are hard for me more than the others. What is my responsibility on stage during a performance? My responsibility on stage during a performance is to follow instructions and play, and do what I have practiced and rehearsed. What will I do differently in preparing for the next concert? I will practice each song more than I had before, and do what I said for the first question. What is expected of me as an audience member: What do I need to be doing while someone is performing? I need to listen, pay attention, and not talk during someone else's performance. So today, I have decided what I am doing for the water project and who I am doing it with. I am doing this project with Lexa, and Sami, two of my friends on C side. I am really excited because we are organizing a dance competition, fundraising from a bake sale, and presenting to the Elementary School. I think that we are going to have a great service project because we have many elements, and all money that we earn is going to a charity. We have started making flyers for the dance competition. I am so excited to do this!!!

What did you already know? I already knew a few things about spreadsheet, and I knew about converting percents, but a lot of the things we did I learned were new. What did you learn? (from your project? from your parents?) I learned many new things about banks, and how money works. I also learned a lot about spreadsheet and how to use it. How might this affect what you do in the future? I think this will affect me because I know what options I have to make with my money and what the best decisions are that will improve my income. What was your favorite part of the project? Least favorite part? My favorite part of the project was doing the spreadsheet because I learned lots of cool things and things just happened without me even trying, like the sum of something happened with just one click. My goal was to have my evidence be more relevant, and since in our myth, evidence wasn't a main part of it, I think that I have improved on that because the reason why my main character turned into a cactus was because he thought he was the most important and the evidence for that was more relevant than it would have been last semester. I think I have used the methods I thought I could use that would help me because I thought that I could get peer feedback and I did. That really helped me. Overall, I think that I have accomplished my writing goal in my myth.

I think that I have achieved my writing goal because in my newest reader response my evidence was very relevant. I think that it helped support the claim. I used the techniques that I thought I would use, and they really helped me. I think that I can work on my reading goal because I have started to read some science-fictions, but I really want to try and read some sort of biography. I think that if I try out a new genre, I will really like it and I will keep trying new genres.

 I think this picture shows texture and atypical angle, but I used it for texture because it shows the sharpness texture needs, but this is also atypical angle because the picture was taken at an unusual or non-typical angle.    I think this picture also shows atypical angle and texture, but I used this for atypical angle because my other texture pictures were sharper, and I felt that this picture was more atypical because it is a picture of a drain cover. If I could do something different in the assignment I would have taken pictures over the break because I knew about the project over the break, but I never got to the point of actually taking pictures, and I think I could have found more pictures that fit the categories that were naturally put there. The process for taking the pictures weren't quite as hard as I thought it would be because many of the pictures that I took were "set up" for me. I think that the "e" under a microscope is different because of each power, and some powers are more zoomed in than others, and they can catch pieces of dust and the surrounding paper and focus on that. I think that the "e" was inverted when I looked at it under a microscope because there are concave lenses in the microscope, and other lenses that could flip the "e" around, and the lens could also flip the "e" because of it's power.

My first step was to make 4 ideas on one page because I needed somewhere to start off.  Then, I needed to try out different medias to see which one I wanted to use. Next, I chose one of the ideations I made, and made them into a full sized rough draft so I could try out different medias, and trace the design onto my final draft. Then, I traced my rough draft onto a blank sheet of paper over a light table, chose my final colors and medias, and made my final draft! The best part of this assignment for me was to make the dripping part of my name because I learned about beads, and how shaking the paper would make the bead into a drop, forming a drip. I also learned that I could manipulate the paint in a way so I could make the drips end in the middle, looking like this is happening in front of you.
